Tourist Attractions
Not only will the attractions of this island tell you about the religious culture of the locals, they also paint a vivid picture of both the medieval and Byzantine times.
- Nea Moni Monastery - because of the sacred nature of this building, it has even been recognized UNESCO for its cultural importance. It was built and completed in the 11th century and served as the main worship point for Christians on the island.
- Pirgi - this is one village you should definitely get to visit to see what medieval living looks like. This town existed from the Byzantine times as well proven by the Aghios Apostolos church still in existence in the island. Almost everything on the island is artistically right from the medieval architecture in worship centers to the homesteads decorated with wall designs known locally as Ksista.
- Fun at the North - Northern Chios has its fair share of fun as well, which you can hunt for in your car rental. There are several landmarks in this region, namely the Aghio Galas caves, Volissos Fortress, Ecclesiastic Museum, Kampia Ravines, Lagada harbor and the village of Nagos.
- Island Central - when you are done with the north, it’s about time you explored the central as well. There may be not as many attractions here, but you cannot miss the fun water activities at Karfas Beach, interacting with locals at Anavatos Village or sightseeing the Sanctuary of Daskalopetra.
- The Mosque in Central Chios - there is a 19th century mosque constructed in the town’s central square. The mosque is a beauty to behold with the minarets flowing intricately on its façade. However, you may not find the locals happy about this attraction, especially when it sparks grim memories of the manslaughter the Ottoman Turks carried out in the 18th century.
Chios Island is a different world of its own and offers the perfect escape off the shores of the Greece Coastline.
