Pico is a very interesting very beautiful island of the Azores and is one of the most underrated in the region and for this reason; it has remained a rather hidden gem for a long time. This is rather conflicting though, when you consider that the town, Pico, is named after the imposing mountain within its boundaries, which is also the largest in PT. On top of that is also has a rich heritage of whale hunting and winery, being home to the widely known wines. The Pico Mountain is now dormant but is its heydays; it was so active that the town came to be known as Ilha Preta meaning ‘Black Island’, resulting from the black volcanic soil all over the island. And this just adds to the beauty of the land. This area has such a rich heritage that you have to get a car cire to discover all that is on this island.
Immediately after landing at the airport, had you made a booking in advance with your company of choice, you will find the automobile ready for pick up as soon as you present your voucher and a photo ID as well as your valid drivers’ license. Had many people booked rental cars with the same airport, the agency will instead have a shuttle pick all of you up and drive you to their offices in town from where you may pick your rental; but upon request in advance, they can still have yours specifically delivered at the airport.
If no prior arrangements had been made, you can still get a rental car from the Pico Airport immediately after landing. Several major companies have desks at the arrivals terminus and they will be glad to take care of all your rent-a-car needs as well as settle any qualms you may have. With a rental, you get to comfortably and in your own time tour the city that has come to be known for its wooden boat buildings, the Pico wines as well as the UNESO World Heritage Vineyards that have grown here for generations on end.
Of the Volcanic Complexes, your choices are open among Lajes, Calheta de Nesquim and madalena. If you are not one to find interest in such things as volcanic features, then drive to the Museous dos Baleeiros where the entire whaling tradition of the town is documented; or just drive from north to south sampling all the Pico wines; just remember not to drink and drive.
