Phnom Penh International Airport in Cambodia is the biggest in the country and is situated about 7 kilometers towards the western side of the city. Many international airlines operate to and from Phnom Penh, particularly from many Asian destinations. The terminal represents a range of modern high tech facilities and has separate booths for ancillary services such as arranging for ground transportation, tourist information, hotel accommodation, restaurants and shopping, etc.
Getting into town
There are several options for getting into town from Phnom Penh Airport. Passengers can arrange for their onward travel from the airport, according to budgets, tastes and individual preferences. For those looking for a taxi ride to town, a taxi can easily be hailed from the public taxi stand. A flat rate is generally charged to take passengers from airport to the city center while higher charges are levied for longer distance rides.
Three wheelers popularly known as Tuk-Tuks are also available at the airport. Though this is a much cheaper way of travelling in Cambodia it is not always the safest method or the most comfortable. If you are travelling on a budget and do not have much luggage you can also take a bus ride from the airport.
To travel in style and to enjoy this extraordinary beautiful country at your leisure the most suitable mode of travel is in a hire car. There are many car rental agencies operating at the Phnom Penh International Airport and you can easily arrange for a car of your taste, budget and needs before stepping out of the terminal. A majority of main roads in the city is in good condition. However, many of the smaller streets are filled with potholes and littered with garbage as well as haphazardly parked motor vehicles. Be sure to have a clear map with you as most of the signage is very confusing or misleading.
Visiting local attractions
Public bus transportation in the city is operated by the three services. Despite the competition bus services in this region tend to be rather unreliable, chaotic and crowded at the best of times. There is direct connectivity to many important destinations in the region, including Ho Chi Minh, Vientiane, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Poipet, Kampot, Koh Kong, Pursat and many other areas. The standard and quality of these public buses runs a considerable gamut with charges varying from low to high depending on the comfort options provided.
Ferry rides are available from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap with the journey taking about 4 to 5 hours. The amazing scenic beauty all the way to the final destination more than compensates for the lack of comfort in a ferry ride. Taxis, taxi motorbikes, Tuk-Tuk three-wheelers and cycle rickshaws are popular ways of travelling in Phnom Penh. However, for those more concerned about comfort, optimum mobility and convenience in travel a hire car is a more welcome option. A rental car is ideal when cruising along the riverside areas, the Royal Palace or any other historical attraction in the area.
