Bahrain has of late become a Gulf hub that primarily caters to Asian destinations. The relatively well known Bahrain Airport is located at Muharraq, an island sitting on the northern part of Bahrain, just 7 km north eastern of capital Manama. Gulf Air has this airport as its primary hub. The airport recently underwent a refurbishment and expansion program of a staggering $300 million. Upon completion, the project will see the building of a multi storey retail complex and car hire/ car park center adjacent to the airport main terminal building. Also, the expansion program will see the main runway get fully resurfaced, building of a perimeter fence, extra aircraft parking bays and high tech security systems.
During the 2010 World Airport Awards, Bahrain Airport won the award of Middle East’s best airport thereby cementing its position as a market leader in this arena. Upon reaching Bahrain, there is a high possibility that a car hire company will transfer you to the terminal using a bus or any other car as the airport’s terminal isn’t able to the ever expanding demands of modern day travelers. After a short distance walk along the gate corridors, you will reach the airport’s security check point and you will be searched either at the fast track or normal snakelike entrance.
The main shopping area at Bahrain Airport features a wide range of items such as cosmetics, perfumes, confectionery, alcohol and cigarettes as well as Bahrain Lottery that will be displaying at least two cars. Car hire services, tour companies, travel agencies and duty free shops are found at this terminal. There are so many car rental companies at the airport and you can always be assured of finding one that suits your needs and budget. When you are travelling through Bahrain Airport, you need to beware of the fact that it is pretty cold at the airport and you will need to dress appropriately for this.
The terminal at Bahrain Airport constitutes of two levels and you will find the restaurants, gates 15 to 36 and Gulf Air Lounge at the right. Gates 1 to 14, some shops, car hire agencies, pharmacy and Starbucks are found to your left. You will be spoiled by the wide choice of foods, alcohol, cigars, and perfumes available at the airport’s main central area. There are smoking rooms at the airport, a prayer room and Airport Clinic is also available.
