Also known as Del Bajio International airport, it is the main airport serving the region of Guanajuato in Mexico. For the budding traveler, Leon Guanajuato airport is the key to seeing and being part of Mexico’s great attraction.
As you arrive at the airstrip you are greeted by the soothing Mexican weather in the summer, which may rise to scotching levels at times. It is a great idea to carry light clothes as most of the activities will be outdoors.
- Puente de Campanero - this is a bridge built in town and was extended a bit to part of the city. You can find a nice parking spot for your car rental nearby, then walk to the bridge and spend the morning or the afternoon viewing how life passes in this Mexican town. In case you get hungry, Santo Café is just nearby with their delicious cuisine and authentic Mexican coffee.
- The kissing Alley - believe it or not, this early became famous for this one activity that goes on there; kissing. The early is famous for a story of two lovers who once made out on this earlier but they had a tragic end sadly. But they left the place famous and you can steal a kiss from your spouse, fiancée or admirer and let one of the locals take a photo of the moment.
- San Ramone Mines - in the 15 century, this mine used to produce most of the silver used in Mexico and part of it exported. When the silver ore was completely exhausted the mine was deserted, leaving the dugout underground trails. If you wish to view the inside of the mines you are welcome to do so though you may need a translator if you are to understand what the locals are explaining.
- San Roque Plaza - this is an arena that hosts several international concerts. The International Cervantes festival is the biggest concert held annually and pulls crowds from all over. When the plaza is not so busy, you can hang out by the cafés and restaurants and have some of the local singers entertain you.
- Alhondiga de Granaditas - this site was where Mexico got its independence through a rebel victory. A grain store was then built on the site which then graduated into a museum that holds the past accounts of the war and the early life of the Mexicans.
When renting a car at Leon Guanajuato airport, always check that it has been registered to you as the temporary user and its insurance policy is up to date.
