Here are the two famous rivers of Belize:

  • Belize River: It is a 180 mile long river with its source in Guatemala, and is spread across Belize. Its basin covers more than a quarter of the country. It flows along the northern slope of the Maya Mountains, running through the center of the country and then plunges into the Caribbean Sea near the port of Belize City. It is also called the Old River. The Belize River is navigable near the border with Guatemala.
    It begins at the junction of Mopan River and Macal rivers in Guatemala and flows through the valley that bears its name and is covered by rainforest.
  • Rio Hondo: The Rio Hondo is a river in Central America which is about 129 miles long. It flows into the south-north direction and empties into the Bay of Chetumal, which opens on to the Caribbean Sea. The greater part of its course forms the border between Mexico and Belize.
